DailyRi 030: The Dearborn Girl Takeover
DEARBORN GIRLS ARE ABOUT TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD.
But really tho. come spring, you’ll be hearing a whole lot about this dg takeover, & i couldn’t be more excited. *Evil laugh*
tonight was the first official event for the dearborn girl podcast, dropping this spring.
HERE IS SOME OF THE MAGIC THAT HAPPENED TONIGHT:
a group of dearborn (arab/muslim) women got together at qahwah house amid a polar vortex & talked about dearborn girl stuff. i mean first & foremost, it was just fun af. we talked about being on airplane rides to the middle east with a whole crew of dearborn people who did the dabke as soon as the plane landed (not surprising); we talked about our intersectional identities as arabs, muslims, women, first-generation, immigrants, &/or members of this beautifully complicated community. we talked about wanting our voices heard, wanting to change problematic parts of our community & wanting to take back ownership of the global narrative on arabs/muslims.
we officially announced our recording dates + introduced guest prep material (called the dearborn girl starter pack). yasmeen & i will begin recording sessions for the podcast on february 10th. by the end of this week, we will post available dates/times for potential show guests, & from there, we will send over the finalized dearborn girl starter pack to potential show guests. from now until march, we will record, record, record. no official dearborn girl socials will go live until this spring.
& honestly, i think my favorite part about tonight was realizing that women other than yasmeen & i are actually proud to be dearborn girls. one of our guests tonight said it best: “i love that we’re reclaiming what it means to be a ‘dearborn girl,’ because my whole life, this has been used with a negative connotation.” what we saw in the space tonight were women who are proud to be dearborn girls & excited to get this conversation going. they even expressed interest in wearing dearborn girl aparrel which obviously made me excited af bc i’m extra & i may or may not have excessive doodles of dearborn girl dad hats, jean jackets & tshirts all over my “class notes”
ANYWAY. SAFE TO SAY MY DREAMS ARE COMING TRUE.
we’re up to something. don’t sleep.
